it some sort of "video DVD" that also includes the raw JPEG photos as data? I've noticed that Nero can burn a slideshow to a real video DVD *and* include the jpegs on the same DVD... So the generated video shows the photos in the right order? And all the photos are there... but not in any real order?

And, yes, it could be that the CD/DVD burner doesn't like the faster processor. It has been playing up recently though - not recognising that I've loaded a blank disk, but it always burnt OK.
